You’ve more than likely heard the expression “Content is King?” I know I have. However, what I didn’t know was the quote was first coined by Bill Gates back in 1996 in an article of the same name. In it he states “Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the Internet, just as it was in broadcasting”. Wise words indeed!
Incidentally, I have to credit Craig Bailey on kindly doing all the ground work in finding the source of this quote. Thanks Craig!
Why is Content King?
Okay, as a small business owner or entrepreneur new to the world of online marketing the obvious question at this point is why is content king?
Ask any online marketing expert and the simple answer would be websites and blogs should be built to solve problems or fulfil the needs of your target audience.
It follows your target audience will find you or a competitor’s website by the keywords and key phrases they type into a search engine like Google. The keywords will describe the products, services or solutions you have on your website. This assumes you have done keyword research into the words your target audience uses to locate your business or businesses like you.
Therefore, the more content you have on your website and blog, which has been created with your target audience in mind the more likely you are to attract them. Note, the content should be unique, valuable and relevant. Can you see how getting a prospect to your website or blog could potentially earn you money if you have set-up your website and blog correctly?!
For example, a local plumbing business has a blog, which regularly posts content showcasing their expertise by answering frequently asked questions and “how tos” by customers. This potentially positions the plumber’s site in the mind of the prospect as an useful resource and trusted authority. Particularly, if the plumber’s competitors are not online and have not provided free advice or solutions via the internet.
